The Hellenic Mountain Leaders Association (HMLA) is the first professional organization in Greece representing certified Mountain Leaders who have completed official vocational training recognized by the Greek Ministry of Education.
Our members are certified by ΕΟΠΠΕΠ, the national certification body and are qualified to lead outdoor recreational activities in accordance with Greek national law.
The primary goal of HMLA is to unite all graduates of the Mountain Leader specialty, foster a strong professional community and support members in enhancing their skills through continuous professional development. We are committed to promoting best practices and high safety standards in line with internationally recognized guidelines for outdoor leadership.
Part of a Global and National Network
As part of a wider international and national movement for responsible outdoor leadership, we work alongside others to raise standards and protect the mountain experience. HMLA is proud to be a member of respected organizations that share our values of safety, education, and environmental stewardship.
Since 2021, HMLA has been an aspirant member of UIMLA, an international body promoting standardized, high-level training and cooperation among professional mountain leaders worldwide.
The Association is also a member of the ΟΦΟΕΣΕ since 2019. This historic federation, founded in 1935, supports outdoor, mountaineering, and ecotourism initiatives across Greece through close collaboration with cultural and environmental organizations.

UIMLA is an international governing body which is representing International Mountain Leaders across the world. One of the most important targets for UIMLA is to represent the profession at the international level as well as setting equal standards of qualifications for all International Mountain Leaders (IMLs). UIMLA promotes the profession and supports the cooperation between IMLs from different countries.
HMLA is an aspirant country association since 2021 and in the process of becoming a full member of the organization.
The Federation of Nature-loving Mountaineering Excursion Clubs of Greece (ΟΦΟΕΣΕ) was created in 1935. It has about 50 independent unions with the right to vote and HMLA joined in 2019.
The purpose of the Federation is the development of nature and tourism, excursion and mountaineering in Greece, with the coordination of its members and close cooperation with other cultural associations or organizations of the country, which serve its ideals.
